Lactulose Eipico (Lactulose)

Lactulose is used in gastrointestinal and hepatic conditions where osmotic activity is required.

• Constipation: promotes bowel movements by increasing water content in the intestinal lumen.
• Hepatic encephalopathy: lowers blood ammonia levels, helping to improve neurological function in patients with liver disease.

• Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine. In the colon it is metabolized by bacteria into lactic acid and other organic acids, which increase osmotic pressure and draw water into the lumen, softening stool. The acidification of colonic contents also converts ammonia to ammonium, reducing its absorption and systemic levels.

Lactulose may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Flatulence: increased gas production in the colon.
• Abdominal cramping: discomfort due to increased bowel activity.
• Diarrhea: loose stools from excess water in the intestine.
