Lactulose Zentiva is an osmotic laxative that acts on the gastrointestinal tract to relieve constipation and lower ammonia levels in liver disease.

• Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine. In the colon it is metabolized by bacterial flora into acidic compounds, which increase osmotic pressure, draw water into the lumen, and acidify the colonic contents. The resulting soft stool promotes peristalsis, while the lowered pH reduces ammonia absorption, benefiting patients with hepatic encephalopathy.
