• Maintenance therapy: provides long‑term control of seizure recurrence and mood instability when used as part of a continued treatment plan.

• Lamotrigine inhibits voltage‑gated sodium channels, which stabilises neuronal membranes and diminishes the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate. By limiting rapid neuronal firing, it reduces the propagation of seizure activity and modulates mood‑related pathways in the central nervous system.

Lamotrigine may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to severe.

Common Side Effects

• Dizziness: sensation of light‑headedness or unsteadiness.
• Headache: mild to moderate pain in the head region.
• Rash: skin redness or itching that is usually mild.
• Nausea: feeling of queasiness or upset stomach.
• Fatigue: unusual tiredness or lack of energy.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: severe skin reaction with blistering and detachment.
• Toxic epidermal necrolysis: life‑threatening skin loss.
• Blood dyscrasias: abnormal blood counts such as agranulocytosis.
• Hepatic failure: impaired liver function.
• Anaphylaxis: acute, potentially fatal allergic reaction.

• Titrate dose: follow a gradual increase schedule to minimise rash risk.
• Monitor skin: discontinue immediately if a widespread rash develops.
• Avoid abrupt discontinuation: sudden stop may increase seizure frequency.
• Use caution in hepatic impairment: dose adjustments may be required.
