Lamisil 1 (Terbinafine)

Terbinafine is an allylamine antifungal used to treat superficial dermatophyte infections of the skin.

• Tinea pedis: reduces itching, scaling and erythema while eliminating the causative dermatophyte on the feet, leading to symptom relief and skin healing.
• Tinea corporis: clears the characteristic ring‑shaped, erythematous lesions on the trunk or limbs by eradicating the fungal organism, restoring normal skin appearance.
• Tinea cruris: treats fungal infection of the groin and inner thigh region, alleviating redness, itching and maceration, and promoting skin recovery.

• Terbinafine inhibits the fungal enzyme squalene epoxidase, a key step in the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. By blocking this enzyme, squalene accumulates and ergosterol production falls, disrupting the integrity of the fungal cell membrane and leading to cell death. The inhibition is selective for fungal cells, sparing human cholesterol synthesis, and results in a fungicidal effect after several days of exposure.

Terbinafine may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.

Common Side Effects

• Skin irritation: localized redness, burning, or itching at the application site, usually resolving after discontinuation.
• Pruritus: generalized itching without visible rash, which may be intermittent and mild to moderate in intensity.
• Dryness: peeling or flaking of treated skin, sometimes accompanied by mild scaling or tightness.
• Headache: mild to moderate headache that may occur during treatment and typically subsides without intervention.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Hepatotoxicity: elevated liver enzymes or clinical hepatitis, which may present with jaundice, fatigue, or abdominal discomfort, requiring laboratory monitoring.
• Severe allergic reaction: swelling, hives, or difficulty breathing indicative of anaphylaxis, necessitating immediate medical attention.
• Blood disorders: neutropenia or agranulocytosis, which can impair immune function and increase infection risk, warranting blood count monitoring.

• Avoid application on broken skin: do not apply to open wounds or irritated areas.
