Lamotrigine is used in neurological and psychiatric conditions that involve abnormal neuronal firing or mood instability.

• Lamotrigine inhibits voltage‑gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes, which limits the rapid influx of sodium ions during depolarisation. This stabilises neuronal membranes, diminishes repetitive firing, and decreases the release of excitatory neurotransmitters such as glutamate, thereby reducing seizure activity and mood swings.

Lamotrigine may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.
