Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat conditions related to excess gastric acid secretion.

• Erosive esophagitis: accelerates mucosal healing and reduces recurrence of lesions.
• Peptic ulcer disease: promotes ulcer healing and prevents recurrence by maintaining a low‑acid environment.
• Helicobacter pylori eradication (as part of combination therapy): enhances the effectiveness of antibiotic regimens by suppressing gastric acid.

• Lansoprazole selectively and irreversibly inhibits the H+/K+ ATPase (the gastric proton pump) located on the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. By binding to the cysteine residues of the enzyme, it blocks the final step of acid production, leading to a prolonged reduction of gastric acidity irrespective of stimulatory signals. This effect persists for up to 72 hours, allowing once‑daily dosing in most treatment regimens.

Lansoprazole may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.
