Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used to manage conditions associated with excess gastric acid.

• Gastro‑esophageal reflux disease (GERD): reduces reflux symptoms and promotes healing of esophageal irritation.
• Peptic ulcer disease: facilitates ulcer healing and prevents recurrence.
• Helicobacter pylori eradication (in combination therapy): enhances eradication rates when used with antibiotics.

• Lansoprazole irreversibly binds to the sulfhydryl group of the gastric H+/K+ ATPase enzyme, commonly called the proton pump, located on the secretory surface of parietal cells. By inhibiting this final step of acid secretion, it markedly lowers both basal and stimulated gastric acid output, leading to increased gastric pH. This sustained elevation of gastric pH improves mucosal protection and supports the efficacy of concomitant antibiotics in eradication regimens.

Lansoprazole may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.
