• Lansoprazole belongs to the benzimidazole class of proton pump inhibitors. After oral absorption, it is transported into the acidic secretory canaliculi of gastric parietal cells, where it accumulates in its protonated form. It covalently binds to cysteine residues on the H⁺/K⁺‑ATPase enzyme (the gastric proton pump), irreversibly inhibiting the final step of acid secretion. This results in prolonged elevation of gastric pH and reduced acid‑related damage.
