Laremid (Loperamide Hydrochloride)

• Loperamide Hydrochloride acts on the gastrointestinal tract to control excessive bowel movements in several diarrhoeal conditions.
• Acute nonspecific diarrhea: reduces stool frequency and improves stool consistency.
• Chronic diarrhea: helps maintain hydration by slowing intestinal transit.
• Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea: alleviates urgency and abdominal discomfort associated with IBS‑D.

• Loperamide Hydrochloride binds selectively to peripheral μ‑opioid receptors in the myenteric plexus of the intestine. This activation decreases the release of acetylcholine and other excitatory neurotransmitters, leading to reduced smooth‑muscle contractility, prolonged intestinal transit time, and increased absorption of water and electrolytes, thereby firming stool consistency.

Loperamide Hydrochloride is generally well tolerated, but adverse reactions can occur.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Cardiac arrhythmias (rare, associated with high plasma levels)

• Do not exceed recommended dose: follow prescriber or label instructions.
• Use caution in hepatic impairment: reduced clearance may increase exposure.
• Avoid in children under 2 years: risk of severe constipation.
• Do not use for infectious diarrhoea caused by Clostridioides difficile or invasive bacteria.
• Consult a physician for ulcerative colitis or inflammatory bowel disease.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in the original pack, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
