Lasilix (Furosemide)

Lasilix (furosemide) acts on the renal loop of Henle to promote diuresis in several fluid‑retention disorders.

• Edema associated with congestive heart failure: reduces excess fluid and eases breathlessness.
• Edema due to hepatic cirrhosis: facilitates removal of ascitic fluid and improves abdominal distension.
• Edema due to renal disease: enhances urinary output to control fluid accumulation.
• Hypertension: lowers blood pressure by decreasing plasma volume.

• Furosemide inhibits the Na⁺/K⁺/2Cl⁻ cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, blocking reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and potassium. This disruption creates an osmotic gradient that draws water into the tubular lumen, producing a marked increase in urine volume and a reduction in extracellular fluid volume.

• Increased urinary frequency: patients notice a marked rise in urine output.
