Lasilix (Furosemide)

Lasilix, a loop diuretic, is indicated for conditions where excess fluid accumulation or elevated blood pressure requires pharmacologic removal of sodium and water.

• Edema associated with heart failure: reduces fluid overload and improves breathing and peripheral swelling.
• Edema associated with liver cirrhosis: promotes ascites resolution and decreases abdominal distension.
• Edema associated with renal disease: enhances urinary output to control volume excess.
• Hypertension: lowers blood pressure by decreasing intravascular volume.

• Furosemide inhibits the Na⁺‑K⁺‑2Cl⁻ cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, leading to marked natriuresis, diuresis, and loss of chloride and water. This reduction in extracellular fluid volume decreases venous return and cardiac output, thereby lowering blood pressure and relieving edema.

Lasilix may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to severe. Monitoring and patient education are essential.

Common Side Effects

• Increased urination: frequent or large volume urine output.
• Electrolyte imbalance: low potassium or sodium levels.
• Dizziness or light‑headedness, especially on standing.
• Dehydration symptoms such as dry mouth and thirst.
• Headache or mild visual disturbances.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe dehydration leading to hypotension.
• Marked electrolyte disturbances (e.g., hypokalemia, hyponatremia).
• Ototoxicity presenting as hearing loss or tinnitus.
• Acute renal impairment or failure.
• Allergic reactions including rash, angioedema, or anaphylaxis.

• Electrolyte monitoring: check serum potassium, sodium, and magnesium regularly.
• Renal function assessment: evaluate creatinine and eGFR before and during treatment.
• Blood pressure monitoring: watch for orthostatic hypotension, especially in the elderly.
• Caution in hepatic impairment: dose may need adjustment due to altered fluid distribution.
• Avoid in anuria: the drug requires renal excretion to be effective.
