Lasilix Retard (Furosemide)

Furosemide is a loop diuretic used to manage conditions associated with fluid overload.

• Edema associated with congestive heart failure: reduces excess fluid and eases breathing difficulty.
• Edema due to liver cirrhosis: increases urinary output to relieve abdominal swelling.
• Edema due to renal disease: helps eliminate retained water and salt.
• Hypertension: lowers blood pressure by decreasing plasma volume.

• Furosemide inhibits the Na⁺/K⁺/2Cl⁻ cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, blocking reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and potassium. This disruption creates an osmotic gradient that draws water into the tubular lumen, leading to increased urine formation and the excretion of electrolytes, thereby reducing extracellular fluid volume.

Furosemide may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to severe.

Common Side Effects

• Increased urination: frequent need to void.
• Electrolyte imbalance: especially low potassium (hypokalemia).
• Dizziness or light‑headedness: due to volume depletion.
• Dehydration: excessive fluid loss.
• Low blood pressure (hypotension): especially when standing.
• Elevated blood glucose: transient rise in sugar levels.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Ototoxicity: hearing loss or ringing in the ears.
• Severe allergic reactions: rash, swelling, or anaphylaxis.
• Acute renal failure: sudden decline in kidney function.
• Thrombocytopenia: low platelet count leading to bleeding.
• Severe hyponatremia: dangerously low sodium levels.
• Pancreatitis: inflammation of the pancreas.

• Monitor electrolytes: check potassium, sodium, and magnesium regularly.
• Assess renal function: evaluate creatinine and eGFR before and during therapy.

• Avoid abrupt discontinuation: taper dose to prevent rebound fluid retention.
