This disruption creates an osmotic gradient that prevents water reabsorption, leading to increased urinary excretion of electrolytes and water, thereby reducing extracellular fluid volume.

Common Side Effects

• Increased urination: frequent and large‑volume urine output.
• Electrolyte imbalance: especially low potassium (hypokalemia) and low sodium.
• Dizziness or light‑headedness: often related to volume depletion.
• Headache: may accompany fluid shifts.
• Tinnitus: ringing in the ears, usually transient.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Ototoxicity: hearing loss or persistent ringing, especially with high doses.
• Severe hypotension: marked drop in blood pressure leading to fainting.
• Acute renal failure: sudden decline in kidney function.
• Metabolic alkalosis: elevated blood pH due to excessive bicarbonate.
