Lasix (Furosemide Sodium)

Furosemide is a loop diuretic used to manage conditions involving fluid overload.

• Furosemide inhibits the Na⁺‑K⁺‑2Cl⁻ cotransporter in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle, blocking reabsorption of sodium, chloride and potassium. This leads to increased urinary excretion of these electrolytes together with water, producing a potent diuretic effect that reduces extracellular fluid volume and lowers blood pressure.

Furosemide may cause a range of adverse reactions that vary in frequency and severity.

Common Side Effects

• Hypokalemia: low potassium levels causing muscle weakness.
• Dehydration: excessive fluid loss leading to thirst and dry mouth.
• Hypotension: reduced blood pressure with possible dizziness.
• Increased uric acid: may precipitate gout attacks.
• Elevated blood glucose: transient rise in glucose levels.
• Dizziness or light‑headedness.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Ototoxicity: hearing loss or ringing, especially with rapid IV administration.
• Severe electrolyte disturbances: hyponatremia, hypochloremia, or metabolic alkalosis.
• Acute renal failure: sudden decline in kidney function.
• Anaphylactic reaction: rare but potentially life‑threatening allergy.
• Thrombocytopenia: low platelet count causing bleeding risk.

Before using Lasix, clinicians should consider several safety measures.

• Electrolyte monitoring: check serum potassium, sodium and magnesium regularly.
• Renal function assessment: evaluate creatinine and urine output before and during therapy.
• Blood pressure observation: watch for hypotension, especially after the first dose.
• Hepatic impairment caution: adjust dose in patients with severe liver disease.
• Anuria avoidance: do not use in patients who produce no urine.
