Furosemide is a loop diuretic used to manage conditions characterized by fluid overload or elevated blood pressure.

• Furosemide acts on the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle by inhibiting the Na⁺/K⁺/2Cl⁻ cotransporter. This blockade prevents reabsorption of sodium, potassium and chloride, leading to a marked increase in urinary excretion of these ions together with water, producing a potent diuretic effect and reducing extracellular fluid volume. The resulting reduction in intravascular volume also decreases cardiac preload and systemic vascular resistance, contributing to its antihypertensive action.
