Lasix Retard (Furosemide)

Lasix Retard (furosemide) acts on the renal loop of Henle to reduce fluid overload in several disease states.

• Edema associated with congestive heart failure: helps decrease fluid accumulation and improve symptoms.
• Edema due to liver cirrhosis: facilitates removal of ascites and peripheral swelling.
• Edema due to renal disease: promotes diuresis when kidney function is compromised.
• Hypertension: lowers blood pressure by reducing plasma volume.

• Furosemide inhibits the Na⁺‑K⁺‑2Cl⁻ symporter located in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. This blockade reduces reabsorption of sodium, chloride, and potassium, leading to increased urinary excretion of these ions along with water, thereby decreasing extracellular fluid volume and lowering blood pressure.

• Increased urination: frequent need to void.
