Lastin (Azelastine Hydrochloride)

Lastin (azelastine hydrochloride) is used to manage ocular allergic conditions by blocking histamine‑mediated inflammation.

• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces itching, redness, and tearing associated with eye allergy.
• Seasonal allergic eye disease: alleviates symptoms triggered by pollen or seasonal allergens.
• Allergic keratoconjunctivitis: helps control inflammation and discomfort of the cornea and conjunctiva.

• Azelastine hydrochloride acts as a selective histamine H1‑receptor antagonist. By binding to H1 receptors on mast cells and conjunctival tissues, it stabilises mast cells, prevents degranulation, and reduces the release of inflammatory mediators, thereby diminishing allergic inflammation in the eye.

Azelastine eye drops are generally well tolerated, but ocular and systemic reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Transient eye irritation or burning sensation.
• Bitter taste after instillation.
• Blurred vision lasting a few minutes.
• Mild headache.
• Redness of the conjunctiva.
• Dry eye sensation.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe ocular inflammation or keratitis.
• Allergic reaction with swelling of eyelids.
• Corneal ulceration.
• Sudden loss of vision.
• Anaphylactic reaction.
• Persistent eye pain.

Before using Lastin, consider the following safety measures.

• Assess patient history: verify no known hypersensitivity to azelastine or other antihistamines.
• Evaluate ocular condition: avoid use in active eye infection without physician guidance.
• Pregnancy and lactation: use only if the prescriber determines potential benefit outweighs risk.
• Concomitant ocular medications: monitor for additive irritation when combined with other eye drops.
• Contact lens wearers: remove lenses before instillation and wait several minutes before reinserting.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep in the original container, protect from light and moisture.

Azelastine eye drops have limited systemic absorption, yet certain drug combinations warrant attention.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): concurrent use may increase antihistaminic effects.
• Other topical ocular antihistamines: may heighten local irritation.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Systemic antihistamines: additive sedation is unlikely but monitor patient comfort.
