Laticort (Hydrocortisone Butyrate)

Hydrocortisone butyrate is a topical corticosteroid indicated for inflammatory skin disorders.

• Eczema: reduces redness, itching and swelling.
• Atopic dermatitis: controls flare‑ups and improves skin barrier function.
• Psoriasis: diminishes plaque formation and scaling.
• Other inflammatory skin disorders: provides symptomatic relief by suppressing local immune response.

• Hydrocortisone butyrate binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, forming a complex that translocates to the nucleus and modulates gene transcription. This action decreases production of pro‑inflammatory cytokines, inhibits migration of inflammatory cells, and reduces vascular permeability, resulting in anti‑inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects at the site of application.

Adverse reactions are generally limited to the application site, but systemic absorption can occur with extensive use.

Common Side Effects

• Burning or stinging sensation at the application site.
• Pruritus or mild itching.
• Dryness or flaking of the skin.
• Erythema or mild redness.
• Folliculitis or small pustules.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Skin atrophy or thinning.
• Telangiectasia (visible small blood vessels).
• Secondary bacterial, fungal or viral infection.
• Hypersensitivity reactions such as contact dermatitis.
• Systemic effects like adrenal suppression with prolonged extensive use.

When using Laticort, consider the following safety measures.

• Application area: limit to affected skin and avoid large surface areas.
• Duration of use: restrict continuous use to the shortest period necessary.
• Occlusive dressings: avoid unless directed by a healthcare professional.
• Pre‑existing infections: do not apply on infected or ulcerated skin without medical advice.
• Pediatric use: use with caution in children, following prescriber guidance.
• Store at below 25°C: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use with potent systemic corticosteroids: increased risk of systemic glucocorticoid effects.
