Lattulac Eps (Lactulose)

Lactulose is an osmotic laxative that acts on the gastrointestinal tract to relieve bowel stasis and lower systemic ammonia levels.

• Constipation: provides osmotic laxation to facilitate regular bowel movements.
• Hepatic encephalopathy: reduces intestinal ammonia absorption, helping to prevent neuropsychiatric episodes.
• Hyperammonemia: lowers blood ammonia concentrations in patients with chronic liver disease.

• Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine. In the colon, bacterial enzymes hydrolyze it to short‑chain fatty acids, increasing osmotic pressure and drawing water into the lumen. The resulting acidification promotes conversion of ammonia to ammonium, which is trapped and eliminated, thereby reducing systemic ammonia levels.

Lactulose may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are related to its osmotic activity in the gut.

Common Side Effects

• Flatulence: increased gas production due to bacterial fermentation.
• Abdominal cramps: discomfort from increased intestinal motility.
