Laxans (Bisacodyl)

Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that acts on the colon to relieve constipation and facilitate bowel evacuation.

• Constipation: promotes regular bowel movements and relieves occasional constipation.
• Bowel preparation: used before diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy to clear the intestine.
• Fecal impaction: helps soften and evacuate impacted stool in acute settings.

• Bisacodyl is hydrolyzed by intestinal esterases to its active form, which stimulates colonic smooth‑muscle peristalsis and increases secretion of water and electrolytes into the lumen, thereby accelerating transit and facilitating stool passage.

Bisacodyl may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.
