• Sodium picosulfate is a pro‑drug that reaches the colon unchanged, where bacterial enzymes convert it to an active sulfated phenolic compound. This metabolite irritates the intestinal mucosa, triggering increased peristaltic activity and promoting secretion of water and electrolytes into the lumen, thereby accelerating bowel movements and facilitating stool evacuation.
