• Sodium picosulfate is a prodrug that reaches the colon unchanged, where colonic bacteria convert it to an active metabolite. The metabolite stimulates enteric nerves, enhancing peristaltic activity and increasing fluid secretion into the lumen, thereby accelerating transit and softening stool.

Sodium picosulfate can cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.
