Laxygal (Sodium Picosulfate)

Sodium picosulfate is used as a stimulant laxative to promote bowel evacuation in several clinical situations.

• Constipation: facilitates regular bowel movements by increasing intestinal peristalsis and water content.
• Colonoscopy preparation: clears the colon to improve visualization during the procedure.
• Other diagnostic bowel preparation: used before radiologic examinations such as sigmoidoscopy or barium enema to achieve adequate cleansing.

• After oral administration, sodium picosulfate reaches the colon where resident bacteria convert it to an active metabolite that stimulates the enteric nerves. This activation enhances colonic smooth‑muscle contractions (peristalsis) and promotes secretion of electrolytes and water into the lumen, resulting in accelerated transit and softened stool. The effect typically begins within a few hours and lasts until the bowel is cleared.

Sodium picosulfate may cause a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to serious.

Common Side Effects

• Abdominal cramps: mild to moderate discomfort in the lower abdomen.
• Diarrhea: loose, watery stools occurring after dosing.
• Nausea: feeling of queasiness without vomiting.
• Flatulence: increased intestinal gas.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe dehydration: marked loss of fluids leading to dizziness or low blood pressure.
• Electrolyte imbalance: abnormal levels of sodium, potassium or chloride.
