Lecrolyn (Sodium Cromoglicate)

Lecrolyn, a mast cell stabilizer, is indicated for ocular allergic conditions that involve mast cell activation.

• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces ocular itching, redness and tearing by preventing mast cell degranulation.
• Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: helps control chronic inflammation and photophobia in seasonal allergic eye disease.
• Mast cell‑mediated ocular inflammatory conditions: provides symptomatic relief in other eye disorders driven by mast cell release.

• Sodium cromoglicate binds to mast cell membranes and stabilizes them, inhibiting calcium‑dependent degranulation. This prevents the release of histamine, prostaglandins, leukotrienes and other inflammatory mediators, thereby reducing vascular permeability and inflammation in the conjunctiva and cornea. The effect remains localized to the ocular surface, minimizing systemic absorption.

Topical ocular administration of Lecrolyn may be associated with local and, rarely, systemic adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Burning or stinging sensation upon instillation.
• Temporary blurred vision.
• Mild eye irritation or redness.
• Tearing or watery discharge.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) affecting the eye or systemic.
• Persistent ocular inflammation or worsening of symptoms.

• Contraindication: avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to sodium cromoglicate or any formulation components.
• Contact lens wear: discontinue use while wearing contact lenses and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
• Pregnancy and lactation: safety has not been established; use only if potential benefit outweighs risk.
• Pediatric use: dosage and frequency should be determined by an ophthalmologist experienced in pediatric care.
• Systemic absorption: monitor for signs of systemic allergic reactions despite low systemic exposure.
