Lecrolyn (Sodium Cromoglicate)

• Lecrolyn, a mast cell stabilizer, is used to treat ocular allergic conditions by inhibiting mast cell degranulation.
• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces itching, redness and tearing associated with seasonal or perennial eye allergies.
• Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: helps control chronic inflammation and photophobia in this severe allergic eye disease.
• Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis: provides prophylactic relief during pollen seasons by stabilizing ocular mast cells.

• Sodium cromoglicate stabilizes the membranes of mast cells in the conjunctival tissue, preventing calcium influx that triggers degranulation. By inhibiting the release of histamine, leukotrienes and other inflammatory mediators, it reduces vascular permeability and nerve activation, thereby alleviating ocular allergic symptoms.

Adverse reactions are generally mild and related to local ocular tolerance.

Common Side Effects

• Transient eye irritation or burning sensation.
• Blurred vision shortly after instillation.
• Mild foreign‑body sensation.
• Temporary increased lacrimation.
• Taste disturbance due to nasolacrimal drainage.
• Mild headache.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe ocular irritation or inflammation.
• Corneal epithelial defect or ulceration.
• Allergic contact dermatitis of the eyelids.
• Anaphylactic reaction (extremely rare).
• Persistent visual disturbances.
• Secondary infection of the eye.

Before using Lecrolyn, consider the following safety measures.

• Allergy assessment: verify no known hypersensitivity to sodium cromoglicate or formulation excipients.
• Contact lens wear: remove lenses before instillation and wait several minutes before reinserting.
• Ocular surgery: postpone use until postoperative healing is confirmed.
• Concomitant eye medications: administer other drops at least five minutes apart to avoid dilution.
• Pediatric use: safety and efficacy have not been established in children under the age specified by the prescriber.
• Store at room temperature: keep in the original container, protect from light and moisture, and discard after the expiry date.

Sodium cromoglicate may interact with other ocular agents, altering tolerance or efficacy.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Use with preservative‑rich contact lens solutions can increase ocular irritation.
• Concurrent administration of topical anesthetics may mask early signs of adverse reactions.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Co‑administration with other mast cell stabilizers may not provide additional benefit.
• Combining with ocular antihistamines could reduce the perceived effect of either agent.
