Lederlind (Nystatin)

Nystatin is used to manage superficial fungal infections of the skin and related areas.

• Cutaneous candidiasis: Reduces fungal load and promotes healing of skin lesions caused by Candida.
• Diaper dermatitis: Alleviates inflammation and clears Candida overgrowth in diaper‑area skin.
• Intertriginous candidiasis: Controls fungal growth in skin folds, relieving irritation and preventing spread.
• Perineal candidiasis: Treats fungal infection of the perineal skin, reducing redness and itching.
• Post‑operative skin candidiasis: Prevents and treats Candida colonization on surgical skin sites.

• Nystatin binds selectively to ergosterol, a key sterol component of fungal cell membranes. This interaction creates pores that increase membrane permeability, leading to leakage of intracellular electrolytes and macromolecules, ultimately causing fungal cell death without affecting human cells that lack ergosterol.

Nystatin may cause local adverse reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.

Common Side Effects

• Mild skin irritation: redness or itching at the application site.
• Burning sensation: transient warmth during application.
• Dryness: localized skin dryness.
• Erythema: mild redness of treated area.
• Pruritus: mild itching at the site.
• Contact urticaria: hives and swelling requiring medical evaluation.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Allergic contact dermatitis: severe rash, swelling, or blistering.
• Systemic hypersensitivity: rare anaphylactic reactions requiring immediate medical attention.
• Severe skin ulceration: extensive tissue breakdown at the site.
• Persistent irritation: prolonged discomfort beyond normal treatment period.
• Contact urticaria: hives and swelling requiring medical evaluation.
• Severe allergic reaction: systemic symptoms such as difficulty breathing or swelling of the face.

Before using Lederlind, consider the following safety measures.

• Assess for hypersensitivity: discontinue use if allergic reaction occurs.
• Avoid use on extensive broken skin: limit to localized superficial lesions.
• Do not apply to mucosal surfaces: intended for cutaneous use only.
• Monitor in immunocompromised patients: watch for atypical infection progression.
• Avoid use with damaged skin: limit to intact epidermis to reduce irritation.
• Do not cover with airtight dressings: may increase absorption and local irritation.
• Store at below 25°C: keep in original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use with topical corticosteroids: may reduce antifungal efficacy.
• Combination with other polyene antifungals: increased risk of local irritation.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Use with occlusive dressings: may enhance absorption and irritation.
• Application with other topical antibiotics: monitor for additive skin reactions.
• Concurrent systemic antifungal therapy: assess for overlapping toxicity.
• Use with topical retinoids: monitor for increased skin sensitivity.
