Lescol XL 80 (fluvastatin) is used to manage disorders of lipid metabolism and reduce cardiovascular risk.

• Hypercholesterolemia: lowers low‑density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and total cholesterol, helping achieve target lipid levels in patients with elevated LDL.
• Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease: reduces the incidence of myocardial infarction, stroke, and related events in individuals without established atherosclerotic disease but with risk factors.
• Secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease: decreases the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with a history of myocardial infarction, angina, or peripheral arterial disease.

• Fluvastatin inhibits the enzyme HMG‑CoA reductase, the rate‑limiting step in hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis. By reducing intracellular cholesterol, the drug up‑regulates LDL receptors on hepatocyte surfaces, enhancing clearance of circulating LDL particles. The net effect is decreased plasma LDL‑cholesterol, modest reductions in triglycerides, and a slight increase in HDL‑cholesterol, contributing to atheroprotection.
