Levelina (Bifonazole)

Bifonazole is employed in the treatment of fungal skin infections by targeting the dermatophyte and yeast pathways.

• Tinea corporis (ringworm of the body): reduces fungal growth, relieves redness and itching, and clears lesions.
• Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot): alleviates itching, eliminates the causative dermatophytes, and promotes healing of the foot skin.
• Tinea cruris (jock itch): controls infection, reduces irritation, and supports restoration of normal skin appearance.
• Cutaneous candidiasis: eradicates Candida species from affected skin areas, relieving discomfort and preventing spread.

• Bifonazole exerts its antifungal effect by inhibiting the fungal enzyme lanosterol 14α‑demethylase, a cytochrome P450 isoform essential for converting lanosterol to ergosterol. By blocking this step, the drug disrupts ergosterol synthesis, compromising the integrity of the fungal cell membrane and leading to increased permeability and cell death. The accumulation of toxic sterol intermediates further impairs fungal metabolism, enhancing the therapeutic effect.

Topical application of bifonazole may be associated with local skin reactions and, rarely, systemic adverse events.

Common Side Effects

• Burning sensation: transient feeling of heat at the application site.
• Pruritus: mild itching that usually resolves with continued use.
• Erythema: redness of the skin where the product is applied.
• Scaling: flaking of the treated skin.
• Dryness: reduced skin moisture at the site.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Contact dermatitis: allergic skin reaction requiring discontinuation.
• Stevens‑Johnson syndrome: severe mucocutaneous eruption, a medical emergency.
• Systemic hypersensitivity: rare generalized rash or fever.

When using bifonazole topical products, certain precautions should be observed to ensure safety and effectiveness.

• Avoid application on broken skin: do not apply to open wounds or severe abrasions.
• Limit use to the affected area: spread only on infected skin to reduce irritation.
• Monitor for allergic reactions: discontinue if signs of rash, swelling or severe itching develop.
• Use with caution in children: follow pediatric guidance and avoid excessive quantities.
• Store at room temperature: keep the product in the original container, protect from light and moisture.

Bifonazole may interact with other topical agents or systemic medications that affect fungal metabolism.
