Levobupivakain Kabi (Levobupivacaine Hydrochloride)

Levobupivacaine is a long‑acting amide local anesthetic used in regional anesthesia and analgesia.

• Epidural anesthesia: produces reliable sensory block for surgical procedures requiring regional anesthesia.
• Postoperative analgesia: extends pain relief after surgery, reducing the need for systemic opioids.
• Obstetric analgesia: offers effective labor pain control while preserving maternal motor function.

• Levobupivacaine reversibly blocks voltage‑gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes, preventing the initiation and propagation of nerve impulses. By stabilizing the neuronal membrane, it inhibits the rapid influx of sodium ions required for depolarisation, resulting in a reversible loss of sensation in the targeted area.

Levobupivacaine may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are dose‑dependent and related to its local‑anaesthetic properties.

Common Side Effects

• Hypotension: transient drop in blood pressure after epidural administration.
• Bradycardia: slowed heart rate, especially in patients with high vagal tone.
• Nausea or vomiting: gastrointestinal upset following regional block.
• Dizziness or light‑headedness: related to sympathetic blockade.
• Metallic taste: transient sensation after systemic absorption.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Cardiac arrhythmia: potentially life‑threatening rhythm disturbances.
• Central nervous system toxicity: seizures or altered mental status.
• Respiratory depression: reduced ventilatory drive in high systemic levels.
• Prolonged motor block: extended loss of muscle function beyond intended duration.
• Allergic reaction: rash, urticaria or anaphylaxis in sensitised individuals.

• Dose adjustment: consider patient age, weight and hepatic function when selecting dose.
• Cardiovascular monitoring: observe for hypotension, bradycardia and arrhythmias during and after injection.
• Avoid intravascular injection: aspirate before administration and use incremental dosing.
