Levocamed (Levocabastine Hydrochloride)

Levocamed, an ocular antihistamine, is used to manage allergic eye conditions.

• Allergic conjunctivitis: reduces itching, redness, and tearing associated with ocular allergy.
• Ocular itching due to allergy: provides rapid relief of itch sensation in the eye.
• Redness of the eye due to allergy: diminishes vascular congestion and visible redness.

• Levocamed contains levocabastine hydrochloride, which acts as a selective histamine H1‑receptor antagonist in the conjunctival and corneal tissues. By binding to H1 receptors on mast cells, it prevents histamine‑induced degranulation and the subsequent release of inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This inhibition curtails the allergic cascade, leading to decreased vascular permeability, reduced edema, and alleviation of ocular itching and redness.

The ocular administration of Levocamed may be associated with the following adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Burning sensation: transient feeling of heat or sting upon instillation.
• Stinging or itching: mild irritation that usually resolves quickly.
• Blurred vision: temporary decrease in visual clarity after dosing.
• Eye discomfort: general feeling of unease in the treated eye.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Severe ocular inflammation: marked swelling or redness requiring medical attention.
• Corneal ulceration: rare breakdown of corneal tissue that can threaten vision.
• Anaphylactic reaction: systemic allergic response with hives, swelling, or breathing difficulty.
• Vision loss: extremely rare but serious loss of sight.

When prescribing or using Levocamed, consider the following precautions.

• Hypersensitivity: avoid use in patients with known allergy to levocabastine or any formulation component.
• Contact lens wear: discontinue use while wearing lenses and wait at least 15 minutes after instillation before reinserting.
• Ocular infection: do not use if active bacterial, viral, or fungal eye infection is present.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: consult a healthcare professional before use, as safety data are limited.
• Systemic antihistamines: be aware that concurrent systemic antihistamines may increase overall antihistaminic effect.
