Levopront (Levodropropizine)

Levodropropizine is used as a peripheral antitussive to manage cough arising from irritation of the respiratory tract.

• Acute cough: provides symptomatic relief by decreasing cough reflex sensitivity.
• Chronic cough: helps control persistent coughing when non‑opioid therapy is desired.
• Cough associated with upper respiratory tract infection: reduces frequency and severity of cough without central nervous system effects.
• Cough due to allergic rhinitis: alleviates cough triggered by post‑nasal drip.

• Levodropropizine exerts its antitussive action peripherally by inhibiting the activation of sensory C‑fibers located in the airway mucosa. By reducing the afferent input to the cough center in the brainstem, it lowers the cough reflex threshold without crossing the blood‑brain barrier, thereby avoiding central nervous system depression. The drug does not interact with opioid receptors and therefore does not produce typical opioid‑related side effects.

Levodropropizine is generally well tolerated, but some patients may experience adverse reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild stomach upset that may occur after dosing.
• Dry mouth: reduced salivation leading to a feeling of thirst.
