Levovanox (Vancomycin Hydrochloride)

Levovanox (vancomycin) is used to treat infections of the gastrointestinal tract caused by susceptible bacteria.

• Clostridioides difficile infection: eradicates toxin‑producing C. difficile in the colon, reducing diarrhea, colitis, and recurrence risk.
• Enteric bacterial infections: treats susceptible Gram‑positive organisms such as Enterococcus spp. and Staphylococcus aureus causing gastrointestinal infection.
• Severe bacterial enteritis: helps control infection by vancomycin‑sensitive bacteria in the intestines, improving clinical symptoms and preventing complications.

• Vancomycin binds with high affinity to the D‑Ala‑D‑Ala terminus of peptidoglycan precursors in bacterial cell walls, blocking transglycosylation and transpeptidation steps required for cross‑linking. This inhibition prevents synthesis of a functional cell wall, leading to osmotic instability and bacterial lysis, particularly against Gram‑positive organisms that rely on thick peptidoglycan layers. The drug is poorly absorbed orally, allowing high concentrations in the intestinal lumen where it exerts its antibacterial activity.

Oral vancomycin may cause a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to severe.

• Abdominal pain: cramping or discomfort in the gut.
• Metallic taste: transient alteration in taste perception.
