Barnidipine, marketed as Libradin, is employed to lower elevated systemic arterial pressure by causing vasodilation of peripheral blood vessels, thereby improving cardiovascular outcomes in patients with high blood pressure.

  • Hypertension: produces a dose‑dependent decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, facilitating attainment of target levels recommended by clinical guidelines for adult patients.
  • Essential (primary) hypertension: offers sustained blood pressure control over 24 hours, contributing to reduced risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and other hypertension‑related complications.

How It Works

  • Barnidipine selectively blocks L‑type calcium channels on vascular smooth‑muscle cells, preventing calcium influx that is necessary for muscle contraction. The resulting relaxation of arterial smooth muscle leads to decreased peripheral vascular resistance and lowered systemic blood pressure.
