Lidocain Egis (Lidocaine)

Lidocain Egis, a topical lidocaine formulation, is used for local anesthesia of the skin and pain relief during minor dermatologic procedures.

• Minor skin procedures: provides temporary loss of sensation to enable painless treatment.
• Superficial lacerations: numbs the area to reduce pain during cleaning and suturing.
• Dermatologic interventions: facilitates pain‑free application of creams, laser therapy or skin biopsies.

• Lidocaine exerts its anesthetic effect by binding to the intracellular portion of voltage‑gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes. This blockade prevents the rapid influx of sodium ions during depolarisation, thereby inhibiting the generation and propagation of nerve impulses. The reversible inhibition of impulse conduction in peripheral sensory fibers produces a localized loss of sensation without affecting surrounding tissues. The effect is concentration‑dependent and lasts until the drug is metabolised or removed from the site.

Topical lidocaine may cause local and systemic adverse reactions, most of which are mild and reversible.

Common Side Effects

• Burning sensation at the application site
• Redness or erythema
• Itching or pruritus
• Swelling or edema
• Tingling or numbness beyond the intended area

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Allergic reaction such as rash, urticaria or angioedema
• Methemoglobinemia presenting with cyanosis
• Systemic toxicity with symptoms of dizziness, seizures or cardiac arrhythmia

When using Lidocain Egis, several precautions should be observed to minimise risk and ensure effective anesthesia.

• Assess allergy: verify patient has no known hypersensitivity to lidocaine or related amide anesthetics.
• Limit application area: avoid exceeding the recommended surface area to prevent systemic absorption.
• Avoid mucous membranes: do not apply to oral, nasal or genital mucosa unless specifically indicated.
• Monitor for systemic signs: watch for dizziness, tinnitus, or visual disturbances that may indicate excess absorption.
• Store at room temperature: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and light.

Lidocain Egis can interact with other medicines that influence its absorption, metabolism or cardiac effects.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Class I antiarrhythmic agents (e.g., quinidine, procainamide): may increase systemic lidocaine concentrations and risk of toxicity.
• Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, erythromycin): can reduce lidocaine metabolism, elevating plasma levels.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Concurrent use of other local anesthetics: additive neuro‑ and cardiotoxicity potential.
• Beta‑blockers: may enhance lidocaine’s cardiac depressant effects.
• Epinephrine‑containing products: can prolong local action but also increase systemic absorption.
