Lidocaína Pls (Lidocaine)

Lidocaine is used to achieve temporary loss of sensation in superficial tissues and mucous membranes.

• Local anesthesia of skin: provides temporary numbness for minor skin procedures such as biopsies or suturing.
• Local anesthesia of mucous membranes: numbs oral, nasal or genital mucosa for diagnostic or therapeutic interventions.
• Pain relief for minor superficial procedures: reduces discomfort during laser therapy, dermabrasion or minor surgical excisions.

• Lidocaine blocks voltage‑gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes, stabilising the neuronal membrane and preventing the initiation and propagation of action potentials. This reversible inhibition stops the transmission of pain signals from the peripheral site to the central nervous system, producing a localized anesthetic effect without systemic sedation.

Topical lidocaine is generally well tolerated, but local and systemic reactions can occur.

Common Side Effects

• Mild skin irritation or erythema at the application site.
• Transient itching or burning sensation.
• Localized numbness persisting longer than the procedure.
• Allergic contact dermatitis.
• Dryness or peeling of the skin.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Systemic toxicity presenting as dizziness, seizures or cardiovascular depression.
• Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
• Methemoglobinemia, especially with extensive application.
• Tissue necrosis if applied to broken skin in large amounts.

When using Lidocaína Pls, consider the following safety measures.

• Allergy assessment: confirm no known hypersensitivity to lidocaine or amide‑type anesthetics.
• Application area: limit to intact skin or mucosa and avoid large surface coverage.
• Quantity control: do not exceed the recommended amount for the specific procedure.
• Avoid ocular exposure: keep the product away from eyes and mucosal surfaces not intended for treatment.
• Monitor for systemic signs: watch for dizziness, tinnitus, or altered mental status.
• Store at room temperature: keep in the original container, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Lidocaine may interact with other medicines, altering its safety profile.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Class I antiarrhythmic agents (e.g., quinidine, procainamide) – may increase cardiac toxicity.
• Concurrent use of other local anesthetics – risk of cumulative systemic exposure.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

• Beta‑blockers – may potentiate bradycardia when systemic absorption occurs.
• Epinephrine‑containing products – can increase local vasoconstriction and raise plasma lidocaine levels.
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) – may enhance central nervous system effects.
