Lidocaïne Hcl B. Braun (Lidocaine Hydrochloride Monohydrate)

Lidocaine is used in the management of pain by blocking nerve conduction in the peripheral nervous system.

• Local anesthesia: provides targeted numbness for minor surgical or diagnostic procedures.

• Lidocaine reversibly inhibits voltage‑gated sodium channels on neuronal membranes, stabilising the neuronal membrane and preventing the initiation and propagation of action potentials. This blockade interrupts the transmission of pain signals along peripheral nerves, resulting in a rapid and localized loss of sensation without affecting consciousness.

Lidocaine may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are dose‑related and reversible.

Common Side Effects

• Hypotension: transient drop in blood pressure after rapid intravenous administration.
• Bradycardia: slowed heart rate, especially in patients with pre‑existing conduction abnormalities.
• Metallic taste: transient metallic sensation in the mouth.
• Nausea: mild gastrointestinal upset.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Seizures: central nervous system excitation at high plasma concentrations.
• Cardiac arrhythmias: ventricular or supraventricular tachyarrhythmias.
• Anaphylaxis: severe allergic reaction with respiratory compromise.
• Methemoglobinemia: reduced oxygen‑carrying capacity of blood.
• Respiratory depression: marked decrease in breathing effort.

Lidocaine should be administered with careful assessment of patient‑specific risk factors and monitoring.

• Allergy assessment: verify no known hypersensitivity to lidocaine or other amide‑type anesthetics.
• Cardiovascular status: monitor patients with heart block, severe conduction disorders, or low cardiac output.

• Concurrent CNS depressants: use caution when combined with agents that lower seizure threshold.
