Lidogalen (Lidocaine)

Lidogalen is a topical local anesthetic used on the skin to manage pain and facilitate minor procedures.

• Minor skin procedures: provides local anesthesia to reduce pain during excision, biopsy, or laser treatment.
• Superficial skin lesions: alleviates pain associated with burns, abrasions, or insect bites.
• Diagnostic skin testing: numbs skin to improve patient comfort during patch testing.

• Lidocaine blocks voltage‑gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, preventing the initiation and propagation of nerve impulses. By stabilizing the neuronal membrane, it reduces the transmission of pain signals from the site of application, resulting in localized loss of sensation without affecting consciousness.

Lidogalen may cause adverse reactions at the site of application or systemically if absorbed in excess.

Common Side Effects

• Skin irritation: mild redness or discomfort at the application site.
• Burning sensation: transient warmth or stinging after application.
• Itching: localized pruritus.
• Edema: slight swelling of the treated area.
• Allergic contact dermatitis: localized rash in sensitised individuals.
• Dryness: mild desiccation of the skin.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Systemic toxicity: CNS symptoms such as dizziness, tinnitus, or seizures.
• Cardiovascular effects: arrhythmias or hypotension in cases of high systemic absorption.
• Anaphylaxis: severe allergic reaction with airway compromise.
• Methemoglobinemia: rare blood disorder causing reduced oxygen delivery.
• Severe skin necrosis: extensive tissue damage at the application site.
• Persistent numbness: prolonged loss of sensation beyond the expected duration.

When using Lidogalen, consider the following safety measures.

• Allergy assessment: avoid use in patients with known lidocaine hypersensitivity.
• Application area: limit to intact skin and avoid mucous membranes.
• Quantity control: do not exceed recommended surface area to prevent systemic absorption.
• Concurrent anesthetics: avoid simultaneous use with other topical anesthetics containing similar agents.
• Special populations: use caution in infants and elderly due to altered metabolism.
• Store at ambient temperature: keep below 25 °C, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Lidogalen can interact with certain systemic medications; review patient medication lists before use.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Class I antiarrhythmics (e.g., quinidine, procainamide): may increase lidocaine plasma levels and risk toxicity.
• Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole): can reduce lidocaine metabolism, leading to accumulation.
• Other topical anesthetics: additive local or systemic toxicity when combined.
