Lifodrox (Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride)

Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the ocular surface.

• Bacterial conjunctivitis: Reduces bacterial load, accelerates resolution of redness, discharge, and irritation, and helps prevent spread to the fellow eye.
• Bacterial keratitis: Eradicates causative organisms, supports healing of corneal epithelium, and helps preserve corneal integrity and visual acuity.
• Blepharitis: Controls bacterial overgrowth on eyelid margins, decreasing inflammation, crusting, and lid swelling, thereby improving comfort.

• Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA supercoiling and replication. By binding to the quinolone‑resistance‑determining region of these enzymes, it prevents DNA strand separation, halting bacterial DNA synthesis and transcription, leading to rapid bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram‑positive and Gram‑negative ocular pathogens.

Moxifloxacin ophthalmic solution may cause ocular and systemic adverse reactions, most of which are mild and transient.

Common Side Effects

• Eye irritation: transient burning or stinging upon instillation.
• Redness: mild conjunctival hyperemia.
• Foreign body sensation: feeling of grit in the eye.
• Blurred vision: temporary decrease in visual clarity.
• Dry eye: temporary decrease in tear production.
• Increased lacrimation: watery eyes.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Corneal ulceration: development of a corneal lesion requiring immediate medical attention.
• Severe allergic reaction: signs such as swelling, rash, or anaphylaxis.
• Tendon rupture: rare systemic effect associated with fluoroquinolones.
• Vision loss: abrupt decrease in vision not attributable to underlying disease.
• Uveitis: inflammation of the uveal tract.

• Indication verification: confirm bacterial etiology before initiating therapy.
• Age limitation: use with caution in children under a certain age as safety data are limited.

• Systemic fluoroquinolone exposure: avoid concurrent systemic fluoroquinolones to reduce risk of additive toxicity.
