Linagliptin Stada (Linagliptin)

Linagliptin is a DPP‑4 inhibitor used to treat disorders of glucose metabolism, primarily type 2 diabetes mellitus.

• Type 2 diabetes mellitus: lowers HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose as monotherapy.
• Combination therapy with metformin: provides additional glycaemic reduction when metformin alone is insufficient.

• Linagliptin selectively inhibits the dipeptidyl peptidase‑4 (DPP‑4) enzyme, preventing the breakdown of incretin hormones such as GLP‑1 and GIP. Elevated incretin levels enhance glucose‑dependent insulin secretion, suppress glucagon release, and improve overall glycaemic control without causing hypoglycaemia in the absence of other glucose‑lowering agents.

Common Side Effects

• Nasopharyngitis: mild inflammation of the upper airway.
• Headache: transient and usually mild.
• Upper respiratory tract infection: symptoms of cough and congestion.
• Dizziness: occasional light‑headedness.
• Gastrointestinal discomfort: nausea or abdominal pain.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Pancreatitis: severe abdominal pain requiring immediate medical attention.
• Severe allergic reactions: rash, angioedema, or anaphylaxis.
• Hepatic injury: elevated liver enzymes or jaundice.
• Severe hypoglycaemia: when combined with insulin or sulfonylureas.

Linagliptin should be prescribed after evaluating patient‑specific factors and monitoring for adverse events.
