Lincocin (Lincomycin)

Lincocin is used to treat bacterial infections in several organ systems, targeting susceptible Gram‑positive and anaerobic organisms.

• Skin and soft tissue infections: resolves infection caused by susceptible bacteria and reduces inflammation.
• Bone and joint infections: treats osteomyelitis and septic arthritis due to susceptible organisms.
• Intra‑abdominal infections: effective for peritonitis and intra‑abdominal abscesses caused by target pathogens.

• Lincomycin binds to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, blocking the translocation step of protein synthesis. This prevents elongation of the peptide chain, halting bacterial growth. The inhibition is bacteriostatic against most susceptible organisms and bactericidal at higher concentrations, particularly in the presence of a compromised immune response. The effect is reversible upon drug removal, and resistance may develop through methylation of the ribosomal binding site or enzymatic inactivation.

Lincomycin may cause a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to severe.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea and vomiting: gastrointestinal upset that may occur during or after infusion.
• Diarrhea: loose stools ranging from mild to moderate severity, occasionally leading to dehydration.
• Injection site reactions: pain, erythema, swelling, or induration at the intravenous site.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Clostridioides difficile-associated colitis: severe, potentially life‑threatening diarrhea with pseudomembranous colitis.
• Anaphylaxis: rapid hypersensitivity reaction causing bronchospasm, hypotension, and possible shock.
• Hepatic dysfunction: marked elevation of transaminases, jaundice, or hepatitis requiring monitoring.

When using Lincocin, clinicians should consider several precautionary measures to ensure safe and effective therapy.

• Pregnancy: Category B; use only when benefit outweighs potential risk to the fetus.
• Renal impairment: assess kidney function; dose adjustment may be necessary in moderate to severe dysfunction.
• Hepatic impairment: monitor liver enzymes; consider reduced dosage in patients with existing liver disease.
• Hypersensitivity: discontinue immediately if signs of allergic reaction such as rash, pruritus, or anaphylaxis appear.
• Concomitant nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs: avoid or monitor closely due to increased risk of toxicity.
• Store at 2-8°C: keep refrigerated, protect from light, do not freeze or shake.
