Lincomed (Lincomycin)

Lincomycin is employed to treat bacterial infections that are susceptible to lincosamide antibiotics.

• Lincomycin binds to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, interfering with the translocation step of protein synthesis. By occupying the peptidyl transferase center, it prevents the movement of the nascent peptide chain, halting elongation and ultimately inhibiting bacterial growth. The drug’s affinity for the ribosomal binding site is high, and it does not affect eukaryotic ribosomes, which contributes to its selective toxicity.

Lincomycin may be associated with several adverse reactions, ranging from mild to serious.

Common Side Effects

• Nausea: mild gastrointestinal upset.
• Diarrhea: loose stools that may be self‑limiting.
