Liposic (Carbomer)

• Liposic, containing carbomer, is used to enhance ocular surface lubrication in conditions affecting the tear film.
• Dry eye syndrome: provides sustained lubrication to relieve dryness and irritation.

• Post‑operative ocular irritation: helps maintain moisture and supports healing after eye surgery.

• Carbomer is a high‑molecular‑weight polymer that swells in aqueous media to form a gel matrix. When added to ophthalmic solutions, it increases the viscosity, prolonging the residence time of the drop on the ocular surface and enhancing the uniform distribution of the lubricant across the cornea and conjunctiva.

Liposic is generally well tolerated, but ocular formulations can cause local reactions.

Common Side Effects

• Transient blurred vision after instillation.
• Mild ocular irritation or stinging.
• Temporary redness of the conjunctiva.
• Slight tearing or discharge.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Allergic reaction such as swelling or rash around the eye.
• Severe eye inflammation or uveitis.
• Corneal ulceration or vision loss.
• Persistent pain or photophobia.
• Anaphylactic response (extremely rare).

• When using Liposic, consider the following precautions.
• Avoid use in patients with known hypersensitivity to carbomer: discontinue if any allergic signs appear.
• Do not apply to infected eyes: seek professional medical advice before use.
• Limit use to prescribed frequency: avoid excessive dosing which may cause irritation.
• Keep container sealed when not in use: prevent contamination of the solution.
• Store at room temperature: keep in the original packaging, protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

• Concurrent use with ophthalmic solutions containing preservatives that may cause incompatibility: avoid mixing in the same container.
• Co‑administration with contact lens solutions containing surfactants: may reduce the efficacy of the lubricant.

• Use with other lubricating eye drops: monitor for additive viscosity that could blur vision.
