Indications & Clinical Uses

Metalcaptase is a chelating agent indicated for several metabolic and autoimmune conditions.

  • Wilson disease: reduces copper accumulation, improving hepatic and neurological function.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: decreases disease activity by modulating immune response and collagen cross‑linking.
  • Cystinuria: lowers urinary cystine levels, helping to prevent stone formation.

How It Works

  • Penicillamine binds copper and other heavy metals through its sulfhydryl group, forming stable complexes that are excreted in the urine. It also interferes with collagen cross‑linking, reducing tissue damage, and exhibits immunomodulatory effects by altering T‑cell function, contributing to its efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis and cystinuria.
