Indications & Clinical Uses

  • Metvix is employed in photodynamic therapy for actinic keratosis, a field of dysplastic skin lesions.
  • Actinic keratosis (field cancerization): reduces dysplastic keratinocytes and improves the appearance of the treated skin area.

How It Works

  • Methyl aminolevulinate penetrates epidermal cells and is metabolised to protoporphyrin IX, a photosensitizer. After topical application, the area is illuminated with red light (approximately 630 nm), causing the generated protoporphyrin IX to produce reactive oxygen species that selectively destroy dysplastic keratinocytes while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

Side Effects

Metvix may cause local skin reactions following illumination.

Common Side Effects

  • Erythema: redness at the treatment site.
  • Edema: mild swelling of the skin.
  • Pain or burning sensation during or after illumination.
  • Crusting or scaling of the treated area.
  • Itching or pruritus.
  • Transient hyperpigmentation.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Severe photosensitivity reactions extending beyond the treated field.
  • Allergic dermatitis or urticaria.
  • Secondary infection of the treated skin.
  • Persistent scarring or hypopigmentation.
  • Systemic absorption leading to hemolysis in susceptible individuals.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Before using Metvix, consider the following safety measures.
  • Sun exposure: avoid direct sunlight on treated areas for at least 48 hours after illumination.
  • Application site: ensure skin is clean, free of open wounds, and dry before applying the cream.
  • Pregnancy and lactation: safety is unknown; use only if the potential benefit justifies the risk.
  • Concomitant photosensitizers: avoid using other photosensitizing drugs or topical agents that may increase phototoxicity.
  • Hypersensitivity: discontinue use if a severe allergic reaction occurs.
  • Store at room temperature: keep the cream in the original container, protect from light and moisture, and store below 25 °C.

Avoid Interactions

Metvix can interact with other agents that affect photosensitivity or skin healing.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

  • Systemic photosensitizing drugs (e.g., tetracyclines, sulfonamides) may amplify phototoxic reactions.
  • Concurrent use of other photodynamic therapy agents can lead to overlapping toxicity.
  • Porphyrin‑related compounds that increase systemic porphyrin levels.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

  • Topical corticosteroids may reduce the efficacy of photodynamic therapy.
  • Systemic immunosuppressants could delay wound healing after treatment.
  • Other dermatologic topical agents (e.g., retinoids) should be timed to avoid interference with illumination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Metvix is a prescription topical cream that contains methyl aminolevulinate and is used in photodynamic therapy to treat actinic keratosis, a precancerous skin condition characterized by dysplastic keratinocytes on sun‑exposed areas.

Methyl aminolevulinate is converted inside skin cells to protoporphyrin IX, a photosensitizer. When the treated area is exposed to red light, the protoporphyrin IX generates reactive oxygen species that selectively destroy abnormal keratinocytes while sparing normal tissue.

The prescribed amount of Metvix is determined by the treating physician based on the extent of the lesion field and the illumination protocol. The prescriber decides the quantity of cream to apply and the timing of light exposure.

The safety of Metvix in pregnancy and lactation has not been established. It should be used only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant, and the decision should be made by a qualified healthcare professional.

To request Metvix, submit an enquiry on the product page at gnhindia.com, specifying the required quantity. GNH India works with hospitals, pharmacies and procurement teams worldwide, verifies trade or institutional credentials, and then provides pricing, availability, shipping details and any necessary import documentation.

Metvix offers a field‑directed photodynamic approach, allowing treatment of multiple lesions simultaneously, whereas topical agents such as 5‑fluorouracil or imiquimod act locally and may require longer treatment periods. Cryotherapy treats individual lesions but does not address subclinical disease. Choice depends on lesion extent, patient preference and clinical judgment.

Store Metvix at room temperature, below 25 °C, in its original packaging. Keep the container tightly closed, protect it from light and moisture, and avoid freezing. Do not refrigerate unless specifically instructed by the manufacturer.

Metvix is applied topically to the affected skin area, usually in a thin, uniform layer. After a defined incubation period (typically 3 hours), the area is illuminated with red light of approximately 630 nm wavelength. The procedure is performed by a qualified healthcare professional in a clinical setting.

Serious risks include severe photosensitivity reactions that may extend beyond the treated field, allergic dermatitis, secondary skin infection, persistent scarring or hypopigmentation, and rare systemic effects such as hemolysis in susceptible individuals. Prompt medical attention is required if any of these occur.

Metvix should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity to methyl aminolevulinate, other porphyrins, or any component of the formulation. It is also contraindicated in patients who have received other photodynamic therapy agents on the same area or who cannot avoid sunlight exposure during the post‑treatment period.
