Midazolam Accord (Midazolam)

Midazolam is a short‑acting benzodiazepine used across several clinical pathways, primarily for sedation and seizure control.

• Procedural sedation: produces rapid onset calming and amnesia for minor surgeries and diagnostic procedures.
• General anesthesia adjunct: reduces the dose of other anesthetic agents and facilitates smoother induction.
• Status epilepticus: terminates ongoing seizures when administered promptly.
• Pre‑operative anxiolysis: eases patient anxiety before surgery while maintaining airway reflexes.

• Midazolam binds to the gamma‑aminobutyric acid type A (GABA‑A) receptor complex at a distinct site, enhancing the frequency of chloride channel opening. This potentiates GABA‑mediated inhibitory neurotransmission, leading to decreased neuronal excitability, sedation, anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant activity.

Midazolam may cause a range of adverse reactions, from mild to severe, depending on dose, route and patient factors.

Common Side Effects

• Drowsiness or excessive sleepiness.
