Midazolam is a benzodiazepine that delivers rapid central nervous system depression for several clinical scenarios.

• Procedural sedation: enables safe, short‑duration sedation for minor surgeries and diagnostic procedures.
• Induction of anesthesia: provides a rapid onset of unconsciousness to facilitate endotracheal intubation.

• Midazolam acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the GABA‑A receptor complex, binding to the benzodiazepine site and enhancing the inhibitory effect of gamma‑aminobutyric acid. This increased chloride ion influx hyperpolarizes neuronal membranes, leading to reduced neuronal excitability, sedation, anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, and anticonvulsant activity.

Adverse reactions may range from mild to life‑threatening and should be monitored during therapy.

Common Side Effects
