Modafinil Arrow (Modafinil)

Modafinil is a central nervous system stimulant indicated for disorders characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness.

• Narcolepsy: reduces daytime sleepiness, improves ability to stay awake, and enhances overall functional performance in patients.
• Shift work sleep disorder: mitigates sleepiness during night or rotating shifts, supporting better alertness and productivity for workers with irregular schedules.
• Obstructive sleep apnea (excessive daytime sleepiness): lessens residual sleepiness in patients already receiving CPAP or other therapies, aiding daily activities.

• Modafinil promotes wakefulness by inhibiting the reuptake of dopamine, thereby increasing extracellular dopamine concentrations in brain regions involved in arousal. It also enhances signaling of orexin (hypocretin) neurons and raises histamine release, contributing to heightened alertness, and may modulate glutamate transmission modestly.

Modafinil may cause a range of adverse reactions, varying from mild to serious.

Common Side Effects

• Headache: mild to moderate throbbing pain, often occurring in the temples or forehead.
• Nausea: sensation of stomach upset that may lead to vomiting if severe.
• Insomnia: difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep, resulting in reduced total sleep time.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

• Psychiatric disturbances: may manifest as hallucinations, manic episodes, or worsening of depression.
