Muse (Alprostadil)

Alprostadil is a prostaglandin E1 analog used in the management of erectile dysfunction.

• Alprostadil binds to prostaglandin E1 receptors on vascular smooth‑muscle cells, activating adenylate cyclase and raising intracellular cyclic AMP levels. The increase in cAMP leads to smooth‑muscle relaxation, vasodilation, and augmented blood flow to the penile tissue, thereby facilitating erection.

Alprostadil may cause a range of adverse reactions, most of which are localized to the urethral and penile tissues.

Common Side Effects

Before using Muse, consider the following precautions to ensure safe and effective therapy.

• Cardiovascular assessment: evaluate for recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina, or severe heart failure.
• Nitrate therapy: avoid concurrent use with nitrates or nitric oxide donors due to additive hypotensive risk.
• Penile anatomy: do not use in patients with severe penile curvature, fibrosis, or anatomical abnormalities.
• Priapism monitoring: seek immediate medical attention if erection persists longer than four hours.
