Indications & Clinical Uses

  • Neisvac-C is a conjugate meningococcal vaccine that targets the polysaccharide capsule of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C.
  • Meningococcal group C disease: provides active immunity to prevent invasive infection caused by serogroup C strains.
  • Outbreak control: reduces transmission during community or institutional serogroup C outbreaks.
  • Travel protection: safeguards travelers to regions where serogroup C meningococcal disease is endemic.
  • Adolescent immunisation programmes: integrates into routine vaccination schedules for teenagers to maintain herd immunity.
  • High‑risk patient protection: recommended for individuals with complement deficiencies or asplenia to lower disease risk.

How It Works

  • Neisvac-C contains the de‑O‑acetylated polysaccharide of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C covalently linked to tetanus toxoid protein. The conjugate is taken up by antigen‑presenting cells, processed, and presented to T‑helper cells, which stimulate B‑cell production of high‑affinity IgG antibodies against the capsular polysaccharide. These antibodies neutralise the bacteria and promote opsonophagocytic killing, establishing long‑lasting protective immunity. The tetanus toxoid carrier also provides T‑cell help, enhancing the magnitude and duration of the antibody response.

Side Effects

Neisvac-C, like other conjugate vaccines, may be associated with local and systemic reactions after injection.

Common Side Effects

  • Injection site pain, redness or swelling.
  • Mild fever within 24‑48 hours.
  • Headache or fatigue.
  • Transient muscle aches.

Serious or Rare Side Effects

  • Anaphylaxis or severe allergic reaction.
  • Guillain‑Barré syndrome.
  • Seizures or high‑grade fever.
  • Hypotension or shock.
  • Immune thrombocytopenia.
  • Persistent neurological symptoms.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Before administering Neisvac-C, healthcare professionals should consider the following precautions.
  • Allergy assessment: avoid use in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any vaccine component.
  • Pregnancy: consult a healthcare provider as safety data are limited.
  • Immunocompromised patients: vaccine may be less effective; monitor response.
  • Fever monitoring: observe for high fever post‑vaccination and manage symptomatically.
  • Concurrent vaccines: follow recommended intervals when co‑administering other immunisations.
  • Store at 2-8°C: keep refrigerated, protect from light, do not freeze or shake.

Avoid Interactions

Vaccine interactions are generally limited, but certain co‑administrations require attention.

Major Interactions (Avoid)

  • Live attenuated vaccines: avoid simultaneous administration with Neisvac-C.
  • Blood products: avoid within four weeks of vaccination.

Moderate Interactions (Monitor Closely)

  • Immunoglobulin therapy: may reduce vaccine‑induced antibody response.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs: may diminish protective immunity.
  • Antipyretics: can mask fever, a common post‑vaccination sign.
  • Other vaccines: adhere to recommended spacing intervals.
