Indications & Clinical Uses

Noxap is a pulmonary vasodilator that acts on the pulmonary arterial circulation to lower pressure and improve oxygenation.

  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension: helps reduce pulmonary artery pressure and improve exercise capacity.
  • Acute right‑heart strain: supports right‑ventricular function by lowering afterload.
  • Post‑cardiac surgery pulmonary hypertension: aids in stabilising haemodynamics after operative procedures.

How It Works

  • Nitric oxide delivered by inhalation diffuses into the pulmonary vasculature where it activates soluble guanylate cyclase in smooth‑muscle cells. This increases cyclic GMP levels, causing relaxation of pulmonary arterial smooth muscle and resulting in selective vasodilation of the ventilated lung regions, thereby improving ventilation‑perfusion matching and reducing pulmonary arterial pressure.

Side Effects

Adverse reactions to inhaled nitric oxide are generally related to its vasodilatory action and the delivery system.

Common Side Effects
